Synthesis of Methyl Orange Dye

Presentation of Findings

I synthesized Methyl Orange, an Azo dye, using techniques learned in my Organic Chemistry II lab from creation of diazonium salt to the EAS reaction between the salt and dimethyl aniline. I also tested the results to make sure I synthesized the correct compound using pH analysis instead of melting point since I was working with a salt. Finally, I dyed different kinds of fibers to look at how the dye attached to the fiber structure. Since methyl orange is a direct dye, no mordants were necessary and it worked best on protein versus vegetable or petroleum based fibers.
